Medical Apps – Echocardiography

EchoCalc

echoCalcEchoCalc is the official App of the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) made freely available to download. It contains all of the BSE normal reference values for transthoracic echocardiography and other widely used reference values, including those for prosthetic aortic and mitral valves.

The app is free to download and is available for Apple and Android.

The information is displayed in an easy-to-use format, and is supported by clear high quality diagrams.

EchoCalc also includes a series of key echocardiography calculators commonly used in clinical practice:

  • Body Surface Area (BSA)
  • Left ventricle (LV) diameter indexed for BSA
  • LV diastolic and systolic volumes indexed for BSA
  • LV mass indexed for BSA
  • E/Em for estimation of pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) and diastolic function
  • Left atrial (LA) volume
  • Aortic regurgitation: regurgitant volume, regurgitant fraction and effective regurgitation orifice area (EROA)
  • Aortic stenosis: aortic valve area by continuity equation and velocity ratio
  • Mitral regurgitation: regurgitant volume, regurgitant fraction and EROA by volumetric analysis
  • Mitral regurgitation: regurgitant volume and EROA by PISA
  • Mitral stenosis: mitral valve area by pressure half-time
  • Mitral stenosis: mitral valve area by PISA
  • Prosthetic aortic & mitral valves: dimensionless index, esophageal obturator airway (EOA) indexed for                                                                                                                                                                      BSA
  • Aortic root dimension indexed for BSA, age and sex of patient

Access 250 annotated images and 189 videos, encompassing a wide range of cardiac pathology. Zoom and pan echocardiograms, and search for specific diseases, without the need for a network connection.

Each chapter includes annotated images and videos associated with the most common cardiovascular diseases. Chapters include:

• The Normal Exam
• Aortic Valve Disease
• Mitral Valve Disease
• Tricuspid and Pulmonary Valve Disease
• Myocardial Infarction
• Cardiomyopathy
• Diseases of the Aorta and Pericardium
• Diseases of the Atria
• Congenital Heart Disease in the Adult
• Diseases of the Right Ventricle
• Infectious Endocarditis
• Transesophageal Echocardiography

This app serves as an introductory learning tool for students or a comprehensive visual reference for cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, internists, other physicians, and sonographers.

Course Tip: Echo in Africa

British Society of Echocardiography_logoEcho in Africa is a collobarative project between the British Society of Echocardiography and SUNheart which takes place at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town South Africa.

Now in it’s third year, BSE members are invited to volunteer to take part in this project screening students from secondary schools in low socio economic rural communities in Cape Town for early stage rheumatic heart disease. Four schools in communities where up to 80% of the students live in shacks are taking part in the project. This project will give these children early access to diagnosis and necessary aftercare through the Tygerberg Hospital and well as validating a scanning protocol to be used in the communities using portable devices.

If you are interested in volunteering you can find more information here.
