International Women’s Health and Human Rights

On demand, online.

What does it mean to be born female in a world where basic rights are often denied based on gender?

What challenges do women face in accessing education, healthcare, and safety throughout their lives?

How can we, as individuals and communities, advocate for and advance the health and human rights of women around the globe?

These are the questions explored in International Women’s Health and Human Rights, a dynamic and deeply relevant online course offered by Stanford University’s School of Humanities and Sciences. Taught by Anne Firth Murray, Founding President of The Global Fund for Women, and Kevin Hsu, an innovator in educational design, the course is designed to educate, engage, and empower learners across the world.

What the Course Covers

This course provides an in-depth look at the issues that shape women’s lives and well-being – beginning in infancy and childhood, continuing through adolescence and reproductive years, and extending into aging. You’ll explore a range of global topics through a human rights lens, including:

  • Being born female and gender-based discrimination
  • Poverty and unequal access to education, healthcare, and paid work
  • HIV/AIDS and other reproductive health challenges
  • Violence – domestic, cultural, and in conflict or refugee settings
  • Sex trafficking and labor exploitation
  • The impacts of aging on women’s health and dignity

What makes this course stand out is its focus on critical, life-or-death issues affecting women, particularly in poorer and conflict-affected regions. It seeks to not only inform but to inspire – challenging students to think deeply about systemic inequalities and how to address them.

Global Community and Real-Life Engagement

More than just a lecture series, this course invites you into an international network of engaged learners. Through interactive discussions, reflection exercises, and opportunities to share personal experiences, you’ll connect with people from diverse backgrounds who are equally passionate about justice and equity.

You’ll also be asked to engage with your local community, helping you tie global human rights concepts to the lived realities around you. This connection between academic study and grassroots understanding is one of the course’s most powerful features.
