Summer 2026, Kampala, Uganda.
Imagine conducting morning rounds in a Kampala hospital, learning bedside ultrasound from Ugandan experts, or exploring the origins of Zika virus in the forest where it was first identified. If you’re a healthcare professional with a passion for clinical tropical medicine, infectious diseases, or refugee health, the East African Clinical Tropical Medicine Course offers an immersive, hands-on experience in one of the most dynamic global health settings in the world.
Hosted in Kampala, Uganda, and offered in collaboration with the Infectious Diseases Institute at Makerere University, the Mayo Clinic, and the University of Minnesota, this course is ideal for those who want to gain firsthand experience in East African clinical and public health environments. Designed for clinicians and health professionals who either have experience or a special interest in global health, this course also fulfills the hands-on and laboratory component of the University of Minnesota’s Global Health Course, enabling participants to qualify for the ASTMH CTropMed® certification exam.
A Summer in Uganda: Learning Through Experience
Set for Summer 2026 (exact dates to be announced), the East African Clinical Tropical Medicine Course is grounded in experiential learning. Participants will engage in a dynamic curriculum that blends structured academic instruction with real-world clinical exposure. Expect a combination of lectures, laboratory demonstrations, clinical case discussions, and small-group hospital rounds, all framed by the context of East African public health systems.
Students will rotate through inpatient and outpatient settings, working with both adult and pediatric patients under the guidance of experienced Ugandan and international faculty. In addition to clinical training, participants will take part in field visits to places such as refugee camps, isolation units, and the Zika Forest – each offering deeper insight into the region’s medical and social health challenges.
For those not already enrolled in the full University of Minnesota Global Health Course, approximately 15 hours of online modules will be provided as a prerequisite, ensuring all participants arrive with a solid foundation of knowledge.
Who Should Apply?
This program is specifically designed for healthcare providers who are enrolled – or plan to enroll – in the UMN Global Health Course and intend to complete CTropMed® certification. That said, individuals from diverse backgrounds and levels of training are encouraged to apply. While prior experience in tropical medicine or infectious disease is advantageous, applicants with limited experience but a strong interest in global health will also be considered on an individual basis.
With only 28 participant slots available, early application is strongly recommended. The small class size ensures a personalized, small-group learning environment and facilitates closer interaction with faculty and peers.
Cost, Scholarships, and Accreditation
The course cost in 2024 was $3,495.00, and while 2026 fees are subject to change, this provides a reasonable estimate for planning purposes. A limited number of scholarships will be awarded to applicants from low and lower-middle-income countries, as defined by the World Health Organization. These scholarships are based on demonstrated financial need, and interested applicants should indicate their request when completing the application.
