International Summer School 2014 "Burden of Infectious Diseases"
September 22-26, 2014
The "International Summer School 2014" is an advanced training course of the Institute for Innovation Transfer at the University of Bielefeld GmbH (IIT) in cooperation with the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Bielefeld.
In 2014 the International Summer School Programme "Burden of Infectious Diseases" is combined with the Summer School “Spatial epidemiology and climate change: Concepts and modelling” (Website Summer School Climate Change), to improve the knowledge about geo-statistical and epidemiological methods for controlling the predominant health problems of the 21st century.
Since 1999 this international Summer School attracted more than 300 participants from Germany, other European countries, Asia and Africa, showing a great demand for further training in infectious disease epidemiology for microbiologists, infectious disease clinicians and public health experts. The course comprises methodological (methods of IDE, outbreak investigation, surveillance, mathematical modelling), practical and disease specified parts.
Each year the topics are adapted to the actual epidemiological demands, focussing this year on emerging infections due to climate change, dengue, tuberculosis, and challenges for Public Health in vulnerable populations.
The course is taught by experienced lecturers from Germany and other European countries, facilitating discussion and networking across geographical and disciplinary boundaries.
The International Summer School Programme Infectious Disease Epidemiology (IDE) focusses on statistical and epidemiological methods for controlling predominant health problems of the 21st century. Among the structural determinants of infectious diseases are population growth, mobility, urbanization, poverty, climate and environmental change and insufficient health care systems, which will deteriorate further with the financial crisis, political unrest and unforeseen weather events, in many parts of the world. The course will teach specific statistical methods in order to detect, and adequately respond to global and local health problems, e.g. in megacities.
The IDE course will provide a deep understanding of the special IDE concepts and methods. The participants will be enabled to manage an outbreak, to correctly create and interpret surveillance data, and to perform simple mathematical modelling for the spread of IDs as well as to use basic health economic evaluations. In addition they will know how to apply the learned concepts and methods to actual global and local public health challenges.
All participants who successfully complete the programme will be awarded a certificate by the School of Public Health, University of Bielefeld. In addition the Summer School will be certified by 3 ECTS and will be certified for continuing education by the Ärztekammer Westfalen Lippe, Germany
The cost of enrolment for the International Summer School 2014 is: 500 Euro / 270 Euro. Students pay the lower price. The tuition includes instruction, course materials and the use of computing center facilities.
If you are not able to participate, you will be reimbursed (10% processing charge), if you cancel your registration until one week before the beginning of the Summer School.
