Contents: The challenges of public health today are overwhelming, in
their sheer numbers, their diversity and their magnitude. The main theme of the
conference ‘Politics, Policies and/or the Public’s Health’ sets
the tone. The big question that will be asked during the conference is ‘To
what extent can the pertinence of our experience as public health practitioners,
the relevance of our results as public health researchers and the ardour of our
commitment as concerned citizens be brought to bear on health politics and health
policies in a way that will tip the balance in favour of ‘and the public’s
