Conference themes NAFLD is the leading cause of chronic liver disease not only in Western countries but also among developing countries of the Far East, South Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. In the US and Europe, nearly 40% of the population have NAFLD and approximately 20% of these individuals are likely to develop progressive liver disease (i.e. NASH) that lead to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Another emerging challenge is hepatocellular cancer which increasingly arises in precirrhotic stages.
