ecdc.europa.eu

The ongoing Ebola disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 6,757 confirmed cases and 3,267 deaths, according to data reported up to 7 September 2026. A total of 813 patients are hospitalised in isolation, while 61 health zones across six provinces are currently affected.

71 new cases and 41 deaths reported

Compared with the previous report, the Democratic Republic of the Congo recorded 71 new confirmed cases and 41 additional deaths.

The new cases were reported in Ituri with 41 cases, North Kivu with 27 cases, and Haut Uele with three cases. Among people who tested positive for Bundibugyo virus, 1,590 have recovered.

Overall, 88.3% of identified case contacts are currently under follow-up in the affected provinces.

Ituri remains the most affected province

Ituri continues to account for the largest number of cases, with 5,406 confirmed infections and 2,450 deaths reported from 28 of 36 health zones.

North Kivu has reported 1,066 cases and 697 deaths from 16 of 34 health zones. Haut-Uele has recorded 256 cases and 107 deaths, while smaller numbers have been reported in South Kivu, Tshopo and Bas Uele.

In total, 61 of 151 health zones are currently affected across the six provinces.

Data remain under continuous review

The figures reported by the Democratic Republic of the Congo are subject to ongoing review and harmonisation.

At the same time, significant gaps remain in surveillance and epidemiological information.

Uganda outbreak declared over

Uganda reported a total of 20 cases between May and June 2026.

On 25 August, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak in Uganda over after 42 days had passed without a new confirmed case.

Imported cases reported in Europe

Several imported cases linked to affected areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have also been reported.

In May 2026, a US citizen was medically evacuated to Germany for treatment. A further imported case was reported in France on 24 June.

On 10 July, the US CDC reported that another US citizen working for a humanitarian organisation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo had tested positive for Bundibugyo virus. The patient was medically evacuated to Germany on 13 July.

Risk in the EU and EEA considered very low

Despite the scale of the outbreak and continuing gaps in surveillance, the likelihood of infection for people living in the European Union and European Economic Area is considered very low.

The ECDC continues to monitor the situation and plans to update its assessment as new information becomes available.
