The event is targeting patient organisations and health leagues, health professionals working in the outpatient and inpatient sectors, research institutes, government agencies, decision makers from the insurance industry and private sector, as well as European, national and regional political actors.

Fascinating topics are being focused on in parallel sessions

ο Health citizenship, e.g. equity and diversity; the experiences of patient organisations in representing
health care policy interests; patient rights and transparency in health care.

ο Health 3.0, e.g. the contribution to patient empowerment made by social media, mobile technologies and educational games, and the role of big data.

ο Empowerment and health literacy, rare diseases and family care givers.

ο Living with chronic conditions, multi-morbidity, and rare diseases, e.g. the sustainability and
effectiveness of empowerment approaches as well as disease-specific and generic self-management
programmes and the role of professionals and peers.

ο Research and facts, e.g. clinical studies and patient participation, patient empowerment and data security, as well as participation, quality and safety.

Through keynotes, symposia, panels, workshops and social media the international congress will explore best practice examples and discuss the policies required to move an innovative agenda forward; the mind shift required of politicians, patients and professionals; the need to invest in health literacy of citizens and to ensure access and support for disadvantaged population groups; and the roles and responsibilities of the various health actors. The issues highlighted illustrate Careum’s commitment to patient empowerment and education through teaching patients the skills needed to live with a chronic condition and its  consequences as well as to navigate the system.
